Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, has been included in every Summer Olympic Games except 1896 as a men's competition sport.

History[]

Netherlands success[]

Football wasn't included in the first Summer Olympics in Athens of 1896 where international football barely came out of the United Kingdom. The tournaments in 1900 and 1904 were only played with club teams with Upton Park F.C and Galt F.C winning the club competitions. But FIFA doesn't recognise these matches and isn't on the list of champions. The Netherlands took the first two official tournaments home after they won the gold medal in London and in Stockholm with both times being against Nordic opposition (Denmark in 1908 and Norway in 1912)

The 1920s and the battle between Italy and Uruguay[]

The 1920 edition of the tournament saw the first disqualification of a football tournament with Czechoslovakia walking off the field because of the bad refereeing from Charles Barette in the quarter-final against Norway as they quoted "they are easily favouring the Norwegians here and some of the simple decisions that we should have got instead of it being played on. This came in the 1920 edition where Belgium would take out the gold medal as the host nation after they defeated the Netherlands in the final.

Records[]

The first official football tournament was held in London, England, 1908.
