The European Nations Cup (known informally as the Euros) is the primary association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), determining the continental champion of Europe.

History

Beginnings

The idea for a pan-European football tournament was first proposed by the French Football Federation's secretary-general Henri Delaunay in 1927. After the second World War ended and regional tournaments was out of the question. It was decided that in 1954 to have a European national competition with twenty-one teams entering the first tournament as they fought it out to make to the final four. In the final four, it was France who would take out the title as they defeated Romania.
